Big purchases seem daunting because this may mean sacrificing what you like. Saving does not mean cutting out all joy and fun. By being strategic, you can allocate a portion of your income to discretionary expenses without struggling with stashing away for your big goal.

How to save money for large purchases without feeling deprived

When it comes to stashing away for large purchases, you need to keep in mind that it cannot be done overnight. Every month you will need to set aside a fixed sum of money, which depends on your income, and be consistent with your efforts, so over time you manage to have a considerable amount of money.

How long it will take to build desired savings depends on your monthly contributions. You will have to be patient. Make sure that you do not panic and rush. Otherwise, you will give up in the middle. Here are the steps that you should follow to save money for large purchases without feeling depressed:

Define your goal

Having a definite goal rather than a vague goal will help you keep going. For instance, if you want to purchase a car and you are saving money for a down payment, you should know which car you want to buy and its market price. Since you know the exact market price, it becomes easy to plan around how much you will stash away every month and how long it will take to come to fruition. Since prices might rise by the time you have arranged the deposit, try to save a little extra money.

Before you start saving, you must know how much you have to stow away and by when. Unless there is a specific amount and deadline, you will not be able to save the desired amount.

Automate your savings

Go through your budget and decide how much money you would be able to save every month. Once you have determined this, you should choose automation. This will keep you from the hassle and ensure consistency. Make sure that you create a separate savings account intended for large purchases, so you do not end up using this money on other expenses.

Practice conscious spending

You do not need to deprive yourself if you have to save for a large purchase. People usually feel deprived when they cut back on everything. In order to set aside money for large purchases, you do not need to cut back on discretionary expenses. You can spend money on things that make you happy, but do it mindfully.

Identify expenses that you want to include in your budget, such as coffee, streaming subscriptions and dining out. If you use only one OTT platform and are paying for two, cancel the additional one. Dine out once a week is fine, but it should not be a regular expense. Do not spend more than 20% of your income on discretionary expenses.

Create a realistic budget, not a perfect budget

You need to be realistic with your budget. Your savings will depend on the approximate price of an item you want to purchase. It is not possible to be able to exactly save what you need. If you find that you fall short of some cash, you can consider using loans for people with bad credit from a direct lender.

Use a sinking fund strategy

A sinking fund strategy ensures that you create a separate bucket for each saving goal. If you keep money in your emergency cushion, you will end up dipping into those funds. If you are saving money for different types of goals, creating a separate dedicated fund for each goal will be a better choice. Label them, such as Vacation Fund or Mortgage Down Payment. Watch it grow month by month. It is motivating.

Change your mindset

Savings sound like missing out. You should think of saving as buying freedom. You are setting aside money to buy something. It is likely that you had to slash your discretionary budget, but it should not disappoint you, because the ultimate goal is to buy something. In the end, you are spending money on yourself.

Reward yourself after achieving every milestone. Spending a little money on yourself is not a bad idea after each milestone, as it helps motivate you to keep setting aside money.

Leverage technology

Use budgeting apps and other digital tools to track savings. Categorise spending and highlight areas where you need to cut back. When you see progress, you feel motivated. Some budgeting apps offer rewards and cashbacks. Digital apps make savings fun.

Increase income

Savings will not cause depression if you try to increase your income sources. You will feel less restricted about your spending. You can take a side gig. Money that you earn from your side gig should go towards your savings. Sell unwanted items online. You can also do overtime if possible. If you are on low wages, ask your employer for a pay raise.

Find joy in substitutions

You might have to slash your budget in order to stash away for large purchases. Even so, you do not have to give up pleasures. Instead, you should choose cheaper substitutes. For instance, cook at home instead of dining out every week. Look for a cheaper restaurant.

Swap gym workouts with outdoor exercises. This way you can save money on gym subscriptions. Do not buy items outright that you rarely use. You should rent or borrow them. Substitution will help you keep enjoying your life without compromising on saving money for large purchases.

The final word

Saving money for large purchases seems very hard. Many people feel deprived while setting aside money for big goals, but there are several ways to do so without giving up fun. Define your goal and automate your savings.

Try to keep 20% of your income for discretionary expenses. Choose cheaper substitutes to reduce your discretionary budget so that you can see your savings quickly grow.
