France’s Greenhouse Horticulture Advances with Local Produce and Smart Farming

France’s greenhouse horticulture sector is developing as growers respond to demand for fresh, locally produced fruits and vegetables, changing weather conditions, and the need for more stable agricultural supply. Controlled environments allow producers to manage temperature, humidity, irrigation, and light more precisely, supporting year-round cultivation while reducing exposure to unpredictable outdoor conditions.

The France greenhouse horticulture market report values the sector at USD 1.16 billion in 2025 and projects it to reach USD 1.76 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 6.15% during 2026–2032. Fruits and vegetables accounted for about 54% of the sector in 2026, while glass represented approximately 57%, highlighting the importance of protected cultivation and durable greenhouse infrastructure.

Fresh Produce Demand Strengthens Protected Cultivation

Consumer preference for fresh and locally produced food is supporting greenhouse cultivation in France. The report notes that domestic fruit and vegetable production has declined over recent decades, contributing to greater reliance on imports. This supply gap is encouraging investment in technologies capable of extending growing seasons and improving production consistency.

Greenhouses provide growers with greater control over environmental conditions than open-field cultivation. Temperature, humidity, irrigation, and light can be managed according to crop requirements, helping producers maintain more consistent yields and quality.

The French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty provides the broader policy context for agricultural production and food-system development in France. Strengthening domestic production and improving agricultural resilience are increasingly connected with investments in modern cultivation infrastructure.

Fruits and Vegetables Lead Crop Demand

Fruits and vegetables represented approximately 54% of the sector in 2026, making them the leading crop category. Tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, peppers, and other high-value crops benefit from controlled conditions that can support production outside conventional growing periods.

The Centre-Val de Loire region is particularly notable for greenhouse cucumber production. According to the report, greenhouse cultivation in the region accounts for nearly 90% of national cucumber production, illustrating how protected cultivation can become concentrated around established horticultural production areas.

The Southeast is another important production center. Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes benefit from favorable climatic conditions, established agricultural infrastructure, and proximity to important domestic and export markets.

Glass Greenhouses Maintain a Strong Position

Glass accounted for approximately 57% of the material segment in 2026. Its leading position is associated with durability, light transmission, and compatibility with advanced climate-control systems.

Glass structures can provide consistent sunlight penetration while supporting sophisticated systems for temperature, humidity, and ventilation management. Their longer operating life can also make them relevant to commercial growers considering greenhouse infrastructure as a long-term investment.

Glass is increasingly being combined with renewable-energy solutions. The report highlights two photovoltaic greenhouses commissioned in Drôme by the Volta Group and Richel Group for kiwi production. The five-hectare facilities are designed to generate approximately 7.3 GWh of solar power annually while protecting crops and supporting water conservation.

Smart Farming Adds Precision to Greenhouse Operations

Digital technology is changing how greenhouse growers monitor and manage crops. Sensors, cameras, IoT networks, and automated controls can collect information about temperature, soil moisture, humidity, carbon dioxide, and light intensity.

This data can then support automated adjustments to irrigation, fertilization, ventilation, and lighting. The objective is not simply to increase automation but to make resource application more closely aligned with actual crop conditions.

The report highlights the Precision AgriVoltaics for Carbon Neutrality Enhanced Production project, funded by the French National Research Agency. The initiative combines AI, IoT sensors, cameras, and photovoltaic panels to support data-driven greenhouse management.

Water Efficiency Becomes More Important

Water management is becoming increasingly relevant as growers face changing rainfall patterns and seasonal drought conditions. Greenhouse systems can reduce exposure to external weather conditions and provide more controlled irrigation environments.

IoT-based irrigation monitoring is being tested in agricultural settings in southern France, where sensors track soil moisture and crop water requirements. Such systems can help growers make more precise irrigation decisions and reduce unnecessary water application.

The integration of sensors with automated irrigation also creates a link between digital agriculture and resource conservation. Rather than applying water according to fixed schedules, growers can increasingly adjust irrigation according to crop and soil conditions.

Government Programs Support Modernization

Public investment is supporting the modernization of French greenhouse infrastructure. Under the France 2030 agricultural strategy, FranceAgriMer has introduced funding programs supporting investments in innovative greenhouse technologies, including climate control, automation, and sustainable cultivation practices.

These programs can help growers address the high capital requirements associated with modern greenhouse construction. They are particularly relevant to technologies involving energy management, automation, water efficiency, and improved production control.

Government support also reflects the broader objective of strengthening domestic agricultural supply. Modern greenhouse infrastructure can help reduce seasonal limitations and provide more consistent access to locally produced fruits and vegetables.

Research Infrastructure Encourages Innovation

Research and experimental facilities are contributing to the development of greenhouse cultivation technologies and production methods. In late 2025, Astredhor Méditerranée inaugurated a new 600-square-meter experimental greenhouse to support practical trials involving crop-production methods and varieties.

Research facilities can help growers evaluate new technologies before large-scale deployment. Trials involving irrigation, climate control, crop varieties, energy systems, and cultivation techniques can provide practical information about how different solutions perform under French growing conditions.

This research ecosystem is particularly relevant as greenhouse operators seek to balance productivity with energy, water, and labor costs.

High Capital Costs Remain a Constraint

Despite technological opportunities, high upfront investment remains a significant challenge. The report indicates that high-tech glass greenhouses incorporating automated climate control, fertigation, and monitoring systems can require investments of approximately USD 2.7 million to USD 6.7 million, depending on design and technology.

Operating costs can also be substantial. Heating and climate control can require approximately USD 22,000–USD 65,000 per hectare annually, particularly for winter production systems. Energy-price volatility can therefore affect the financial performance of greenhouse operations.

These costs can be especially challenging for small and medium-sized growers. Financing support, technology improvements, and efficient energy systems are consequently important factors in enabling wider adoption.

Southeast France Remains a Key Production Hub

The Southeast region, particularly Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, represents the leading regional area for greenhouse horticulture. Favorable climatic conditions, agricultural infrastructure, irrigation networks, horticultural cooperatives, and proximity to major markets support its position.

The Mediterranean climate provides relatively high solar radiation and milder winters, which can reduce heating requirements compared with colder areas. The region is also an important center for greenhouse vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and leafy greens.

The concentration of growers, technology suppliers, and research institutions further strengthens the regional ecosystem.

Toward More Controlled and Resource-Efficient Horticulture

France’s greenhouse horticulture sector is moving toward a more controlled and technology-supported production model. Fresh-produce demand is encouraging growers to expand protected cultivation, while smart farming, IoT monitoring, renewable energy, and improved irrigation systems are changing how greenhouses operate.

The sector’s projected development through 2032 will remain closely connected with domestic food-supply requirements, technological modernization, and resource efficiency. Fruits and vegetables are likely to remain central to greenhouse production, while glass structures and advanced control systems continue to support commercial cultivation.

At the same time, high construction, energy, labor, and maintenance costs will remain important considerations. The long-term direction of French greenhouse horticulture will therefore depend on balancing productivity and supply stability with the financial and resource requirements of increasingly sophisticated controlled-environment systems.
