Outlive is a youth suicide prevention programme in India focused on creating meaningful conversations, strengthening peer support, and enabling young people to take an active role in suicide prevention. The programme engages youth aged 18-24 who have experiences of suicide, self-harm, emotional distress, or mental health challenges, with a particular focus on young people in urban communities.
Led by the Centre for Mental Health and Policy, Indian Law Society, in collaboration with Sangath and Quicksand Design Studio, Outlive takes a youth-centred approach to addressing suicide prevention. The programme recognises that young people can play an important role in understanding the challenges faced by their peers and contributing to supportive communities.
Outlive Chat - Online Peer Support
Outlive Chat is a confidential, chat-based emotional support service for young people experiencing distress or thoughts of suicide. Through the platform, young people can connect with trained peer supporters and have conversations in a respectful and supportive environment.
The service provides an opportunity to talk about difficult feelings, personal challenges, loneliness, or other experiences that may be affecting emotional wellbeing. Peer support is based on listening, empathy, and understanding rather than judgment.
Youth Action for Suicide Prevention Fellowship
The Youth Action for Suicide Prevention (YASP) Fellowship creates opportunities for young people to contribute to suicide prevention beyond individual support. Fellows are encouraged to engage with policy and governance and explore ways to address youth suicide prevention within their communities and wider systems.
The fellowship supports young leaders in developing their ideas, engaging with relevant stakeholders, and contributing to conversations around policy and systemic change.
Public Engagement and Awareness
Outlive also works to encourage open conversations about suicide and mental health through public engagement. Its activities include youth-focused events, awareness workshops, multimedia resources, personal stories, and campaigns designed to challenge stigma and make suicide prevention conversations more accessible.
By bringing youth voices into public discussions, Outlive aims to create greater understanding of emotional wellbeing and encourage communities to approach mental health with empathy and care.
Creating Spaces for Young People
A key part of Outlive's approach is recognising the importance of listening to young people. Their experiences can help shape conversations, resources, and approaches to suicide prevention that are relevant to their lives.
Through peer support, youth leadership, and public engagement, Outlive works towards a more informed and supportive environment where young people can talk about difficult experiences and seek appropriate support.
Whether you are looking for information about youth suicide prevention in India, interested in peer support, exploring youth-led advocacy, or looking for mental health resources, Outlive provides information and opportunities to learn, participate, and contribute.
