Two builders order bricks for identical houses in the same town, on the same day.
One pays less per piece. Six months later, his wall has cost him more.
This happens constantly, and it happens because almost everyone budgets bricks the wrong way — by comparing the rate per thousand and stopping there.
The rate is maybe half the story
Here is what actually lands on your final bill, in rough order of impact.
Mortar consumption. Uneven bricks force thicker joints. Thicker joints eat cement and sand on every square metre of every wall in the building. A ten millimetre joint versus a fifteen millimetre joint sounds trivial until you multiply it across four hundred square metres.
Labour hours. A mason lays consistent bricks faster because he is not stopping to sort, adjust, or pack out gaps. Labour is often the largest single component of a finished wall, and it is entirely invisible in a rate comparison.
Breakage and rejection. Soft, underfired stock breaks in transit and gets rejected at the gate. If eight percent of a cheap load is unusable, the cheap load was not cheap.
Plaster thickness. Wavy walls need more plaster to come out flat. That is more material, more labour, and more time.
Once you add those four together, the gap between a low rate and a good brick usually closes completely. Sometimes it reverses.
What moves the price at the manufacturer's end
It helps to know why one brick costs more than another, because then you can tell a fair premium from a padded one.
- Fuel — firing is energy-intensive, and coal prices move the whole market
- Clay quality and transport distance — good clay is not evenly distributed, and hauling it is expensive
- Firing technology — tunnel kilns cost more to build and run than open firing, and produce far more consistent output
- Product type — wirecut face brick, jali, and special shapes involve extra dies, slower production, and tighter sorting
- Freight to site — bricks are heavy and low value per kilogram, so distance matters more than most materials
This last one catches people out. A supplier three hundred kilometres away can quote a great rate and still cost more delivered.

Budget per square metre, not per piece
This is the single most useful habit to build.
Work out how many bricks a square metre of your wall type needs, add the mortar for that area, add the laying labour, add expected wastage. Now you have a number you can actually compare across suppliers.
Do it once for each supplier you are considering. The ranking often changes completely from the rate-per-thousand ranking, and it changes in the direction of the better product.
Where saving money is genuinely sensible
Not every wall needs the best brick in the catalogue. That is real, and worth saying.
Internal partitions that will be plastered and painted do not need face-quality units. Boundary walls at the back of a plot do not need a premium wirecut finish. Blocks in an infill wall can be a lighter, cheaper unit than the structural brick below.
Match the product to the job. Buying face brick for a wall nobody will ever see is not quality — it is waste.
Most established brick manufacturing companies in India carry several ranges precisely so you can mix. Use that.
Where saving money will cost you
Structural walls. Exposed elevations. Anything below damp level.
On these, an underfired or high-absorption brick creates problems that surface two to five years later — damp patches, efflorescence, cracking at joints — and the repair is always more expensive than the original saving.
There is no clever way around this. The wall is either built with a sound brick or it isn't.
Three hidden costs almost nobody budgets for
Storage and double handling. Bricks dumped in a corner get moved twice, break more, and slow down the site. Pallets and a planned stacking area cost almost nothing and save real quantity.
Running short. If you order exactly what the calculation says, you will run short. Cuts at corners, breakage in transit, rejected pieces at the gate — all of it eats into the count. Ordering five to ten percent extra is cheaper than an emergency top-up lot at whatever rate is available that week.
Waiting. A delayed delivery does not just delay the wall. It idles the labour standing next to it. That cost never appears in any material comparison, and it is often the largest one of the three.
None of these show up when you compare rates on the phone. All of them show up on the final account.
A note on buying direct
Buying from the manufacturer rather than a trading intermediary usually helps on two fronts: price, because there is one less margin in the chain, and consistency, because you know which kiln the stock came from.
