How to Check AI-Written Text for Free Before You Publish

By Admin     08-07-2026     21

You paste a finished draft into your editor, read the first few lines, and feel that tiny pause. Nothing is badly written. The grammar is fine. The sentences behave themselves. Still, something feels a bit too smooth, like the piece has been ironed flat before anyone actually touched it. If you publish often, you’ll notice that feeling more than you want to admit.

The first read usually tells you more than you think

A checker can help, sure. But your own first read still matters, because you already know what rushed, borrowed, or overly polished writing feels like after seeing enough of it.

Read it once without fixing anything

Open the text and read it like a normal person, not like an editor with a red pen. Don’t correct commas yet. Don’t rewrite the intro. Just notice where your attention slips.
If the piece sounds confident but oddly empty, that’s usually the first hint.

Watch for the too-perfect rhythm

AI-style writing often has a neat pace. Medium sentence. Medium sentence. Another medium sentence that politely explains the previous one. Honestly, that rhythm bothers me more than a few awkward human lines ever could.
A human draft usually has dents in it — a sudden short line, a weirdly specific example, maybe a sentence that could be better but still feels alive.

Check whether the examples feel lived-in

“Content quality matters” tells you almost nothing. “You changed three product descriptions on Friday night and now all of them sound the same” gives the reader a place to stand.
That difference is not exactly technical, but you can feel it.

Free tools are useful, just not magical

A free checker should be treated like a second opinion. Not a judge. Not a final answer. More like that friend who says, “Hmm, read this part again.”

Run the text through a checker once

After your own read, use an AI checker free tool to get another signal. The point is not to panic over the result. The point is to see whether the tool notices the same flat patches you noticed.
And sometimes it will flag a section you thought was perfectly fine.

Don’t chase a perfect score

Scores can make people act strange. You rewrite one sentence, refresh the result, rewrite again, and suddenly the article sounds worse than before.
To be fair, the tool is only reading patterns. It cannot know your intent, your deadline, or why you used the same phrase twice because it actually fit.

Look at the marked parts, not just the result

If a checker highlights a whole paragraph, read that paragraph aloud. Does it sound like something you would say to someone? Or does it sound like a clean answer from a help page?
That little test catches more than people expect.

The boring edits usually fix the biggest problem

Most AI-looking text does not need drama. It needs small human interruptions. A specific detail here. A less polished sentence there. Maybe one line that admits uncertainty.

Add details that only fit this article

A weak paragraph says the writing should be reviewed before publishing. A better one says you should check the intro, the repeated phrases, and the final paragraph after leaving the draft for 20 minutes.
Small numbers help. Tiny situations help more.

Break the smooth parts on purpose

Sometimes the fix is as simple as cutting one long polished line into two rougher ones. But don’t overdo it, because forced casual writing can become its own problem.
That’s the funny part.

Keep your own voice in the draft

If you always remove every odd phrase, the piece starts sounding like everyone else’s. For whatever reason, people often polish away the only lines that had a pulse.
Leave a few fingerprints.

Before you publish, give it one last slow pass

I like checking the ending last because endings often expose the whole draft. If the final paragraph suddenly becomes grand and shiny, the rest of the article may have been pulled in that direction too.
Read the page from bottom to top once. Not every line, maybe just the last sentence of each paragraph. You’ll notice repeated closers, soft claims, and those tidy little lines that sound wiser than they are.
Then make the smallest useful changes. Swap a vague line for a real example. Cut a sentence that only exists to sound complete. Add a human pause where the writing feels too clean.
Publishing will probably keep getting stranger as AI tools become normal desk tools. Weirdly enough, the best check may still be simple: does the piece sound like someone had a reason to write it, or just a reason to finish it?
