How Maui and Mount Shasta became the two sacred landscaped journeys towards spiritual awakening.

Some healing is done outside of the therapist's office. Not everything comes in the form of conversation or analysis or a careful unpacking of the past. Part of the biggest changes on human consciousness occur in the presence of land — an ancient, powerful, alive land, to which human life has largely forgotten how to relate.
In all the spiritual traditions of the world, some locations are always recognised as having a particular power to enable the inner transformation of the being. It is not something that I or anyone has made sacred. Not only are they sacred, but generations have come, pilgrims and common folk alike, with open hearts to discover an experience in these places that could not be put into words — and continues to bring others back.
Of these two locations stand out as some of the spiritual retreats of our time. One is on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, formed by volcanic activity, and steeped in one of the most heart-oriented native cultures in the world. The other is a stand-alone chert mountain above the tall forests of Northern California, an isolated volcanic peak which for thousands of years has been the base of shamanism and ceremony.
Maui and Mt. Shasta. Differences in just about any way. They share one common core gift: United to accelerate human healing in a way that couldn't happen in a normal environment.
Enjoy a getaway at Maui bounded by the ocean and transformed by mountains.
We have more than one reason why Maui Spiritual Retreats always has the most talented healers, most qualified teachers and individuals who have tried all the modalities before coming here. It's not only a beautiful setting for inner work on the island. It is a part of it, it is actively involved in it.
Maui's topography is one of the most sacred on earth of any retreat. The island has a remarkable diversity of vibrant environments that are each rich in healing qualities and each evoke other aspects of the inner travel, all contained within its relatively small geography.
Perhaps the most powerful place in the state is Haleakalā, the inactive volcano that's more than 10,000 feet high. The name, House of the Sun, suggests the element of lightness and highness it possesses, which often practitioners and visitors report, evokes the sense of priority, the clearing of any mental dust, and the spaciousness in which true insight can emerge. Sunrises are transformative from the top of Haleakalā, from a sea of clouds in the darkness of the predawn sky. It simply is.
The island is a succession of healing landscapes, below the summit. The old rainforest on the Road to Hana is a stillness that envelops, calms down the nervous system and brings a level of presence one seldom finds in everyday life. Black lava sand beaches, where lava meets ocean, are a reminder of the constant cycle of creation/destruction and the metaphor can often be uncannily evocative of participants' own inner process.
The island's native Hawaiian cultural tradition that is ingrained throughout the island adds another layer of medicine all on its own. Forgiveness and reconciliation (Ho'oponono) and sacred bodywork (Lomilomi) both came out of this land; the former, an ancient practice; the latter, a traditional healing practice that recognizes the physical body as one with the emotional and spiritual body. They are endowed with the intelligence of a culture that, throughout history, has acknowledged healing as a communal, sacred and deeply loving initiative. That intelligence is in the soil, in the water, in the skillful Hawaiian facilitators' attention to their work.
Mountain that Listens, Mount Shasta:
Where Maui's healing comes from warmth, beauty and the oceanic touch of Hawaiian aloha Mountain Shasta Spiritual Retreats have something else — and it's just as necessary. The medicine of stillness, solitude, and the old silence found only in a mountain that has been here for thousands of years for ceremonies.
Mount Shasta stands all by itself. Stretching more than fourteen thousand feet above the ground, it towers over Northern California, and for any who have gazed up from its base, the spiritual aura is as self-explanatory as is its name. Oral history tells of the Wintu, Shasta, Modoc and Achumawi peoples who have viewed this peak as the place where creation began. Today, dozens of spiritual practitioners from around the world come to this mountain, where the stories have always come through.
The same thing you'll hear keepers say over and over again! It's not as loud as that nor as long-lasting. A deepening. A settling. The quality of inner hearing that is made available when there is sufficient space in the particular stillness of the mountain for the small voice under the noise to be heard.
In measurable ways, these geomagnetic and electromagnetic properties are part of this experience of the volcanic terrain. The region around the mountain has been documented to impact human physiology, slow breathing, deepen sleep, enhance dream activity, and create states of relaxed awareness that are conducive to the kind of inner workings it is in humans' nature to seek out in the first place when they go on spiritual retreat.
Everything that's done in a ceremony is magnified by the surrounding landscape. Old Growth Forest Conifer Forests are natural cathedral spaces for meditation, drumming circles and vision work. The purity of the springs, which is in turn brought about by the glacially fed water, is medicinal, as described by the practitioners in all traditions. The high alpine meadows that open above the tree line provide the physical and metaphorical view that always brings about breakthrough clarity for retreat participants.
Mountain is more than a backdrop for shamanic practices. It serves as co-facilitator, resonating with the intention, supporting the energy of the collective practice and holding individuals in the challenging moments that bring deep healing work.It functions as co-facilitator: responding to the intention, amplifying the energy of the collective practice and holding the individuals through difficult moments that bring deep healing work.
Integrating Sacred Ground: Bringing it Home
But what happens after any retreat experience is the question that ultimately determines its value, in this case, to Maui or Mount Shasta or both through a committed healing journey.
Transformation that doesn't actually take place is a transformation unmade. In sacred landscape, the insights, the releases, the changes in self-understanding which emerge must be handled carefully as they are brought back into the texture of the ordinary.
That tending is practiced by means of integration. Contains journaling that preserves what has come up before it is forgotten. Somatic practices to support body in continuing to process what started in ceremony. A tribe of fellow travellers who know the land, see the unfolding without confusion or judgement. The second session where facilitators of the past and the future landscapes are present.
The most experienced providers of retreats know that integration is a part of the package. It's the second half, the part that decides whether anything that has been sown in sacred soil is able to plant itself on life at home.
Sacred Voyages: The Quest for both Worlds
Our approach to the Mount Shasta Spiritual Retreats and everything we offer at Sacred Voyages is built around the common understanding that a transformative retreat experience requires A) the right landscape B) the right facilitation and C) strong integration support deployed in equal measure.
As you may already know, we offer transformational spiritual retreats on Maui and in the sacred land near Mount Shasta that help participants connect with healers and ceremonial guides who embody real authenticity and carry the depth of their traditions. Our retreats are deliberately intimate — no larger than ten and just enough to have the personal attention true transformation needs.
Whether the ocean and volcanic warmth of Maui is calling to you or Mount Shasta's ancient stillness strikes closer to home within where you are on your journey right now, Sacred Voyages will meet you exactly where you are and take you exactly where it is you're meant to go.
