A well-made leather jacket or tailored suit inspired by a favorite character does double duty: it works as a costume on Halloween night, and it works as an actual piece of clothing every other day of the year. That's a much better return on investment than a costume you wear once and then store in a closet forever.
It also just tends to look better. There's a noticeable difference between a costume built from genuine materials with real stitching and one built from the cheapest fabric available, and it shows up in every photo taken that night.
