Classic Bloody Mary Recipe With a Salted Rim

A Bloody Mary is a savory cocktail made with vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and seasonings. It is different from many popular cocktails because it is not designed to be sweet. Instead, it combines tomato, citrus, spice, and savory flavors in one glass.

The drink is often associated with brunch, but there is no reason to save it only for the morning. A well-made Bloody Mary can work as a relaxed weekend cocktail, especially when served cold over ice with a salted rim and a few simple garnishes.

What Is a Bloody Mary?

The Bloody Mary is a vodka-based cocktail built around tomato juice. The International Bartenders Association lists vodka, tomato juice, fresh lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, celery salt, and pepper among its ingredients. Its official method calls for gently stirring the ingredients with ice before serving.

What makes the Bloody Mary interesting is how easily its flavor can be adjusted. More hot sauce can make it spicy, extra lemon can make it brighter, while Worcestershire sauce adds a deeper savory note. The salt around the rim adds another layer of seasoning with each sip.

The garnish can also be simple or elaborate. Celery and lemon are traditional choices, while olives, pickles, tomatoes, and other savory ingredients are commonly used today.

The Story Behind the Bloody Mary

The history of the Bloody Mary is not completely settled. One of the most widely reported stories connects the drink to Fernand Petiot, a bartender at Harry's New York Bar in Paris during the 1920s.

According to the Smithsonian, Petiot originally made the drink with equal parts vodka and tomato juice. The simple combination eventually developed into the much more seasoned cocktail that people recognize today.

This early version was quite different from the Bloody Mary served in bars today. Modern recipes commonly include lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, pepper, and celery salt. The International Bartenders Association currently lists the Bloody Mary among its Contemporary Classics.

The cocktail also became strongly connected with brunch culture. Over time, restaurants and bars began experimenting with garnishes, and the Bloody Mary became known for its ability to carry everything from celery and olives to pickles and other savory additions.

That flexibility is part of the reason the drink has remained popular. There is a recognizable basic recipe, but there is also plenty of room to adjust the flavor to your preference.

Classic Bloody Mary Recipe

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 1
Method: Stirred
Glass: Rocks or highball glass

Ingredients

  • 45 ml vodka
  • 90 ml tomato juice
  • 15 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • Tabasco, to taste
  • Celery salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Ice
  • Classic Margarita Salt, for the rim
  • 1 celery stalk, for garnish
  • 1 lemon wedge, for garnish
  • Olives, optional

The vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, celery salt, and pepper measurements are based on the International Bartenders Association's Bloody Mary recipe.

How to Make a Bloody Mary

1. Prepare the Salted Rim

Start by preparing your glass. Run a lemon wedge around the outside edge of the rim. Place Classic Margarita Salt on a small plate and gently dip the rim into the salt.

You do not have to coat the entire rim. A half-salted rim gives you a choice between a salted and unsalted sip and also keeps the presentation clean.

2. Add the Ingredients

Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the vodka, tomato juice, fresh lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, celery salt, and black pepper.

3. Stir Gently

Stir the ingredients gently with the ice until the drink is chilled and properly combined. The IBA method specifically calls for stirring the ingredients with ice rather than shaking them.

4. Pour Over Ice

Fill your prepared glass with fresh ice and pour the Bloody Mary over it.

If you prefer a longer drink, a highball glass works well. The IBA notes that a highball glass can be used when the drink is requested with ice.

5. Add the Garnish

Finish with a celery stalk and lemon wedge. Add a few olives or a pickle if you want more savory flavor and texture.

A simple garnish is often enough. You do not need to turn the cocktail into a full meal to make it look appealing.

Why Add Salt to the Rim?

Salt is a natural companion to the savory character of a Bloody Mary. Tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and celery salt already give the drink plenty of flavor, so the rim should complement the cocktail rather than overpower it.

Using Classic Margarita Salt on the rim also gives the first sip an immediate salty contrast against the tomato, lemon, and spice.

For the best result, keep the salt layer relatively light. Too much salt can dominate the other flavors.

Quick Tips for a Better Bloody Mary

Use fresh lemon juice. Fresh citrus gives the drink a cleaner and brighter flavor.

Start with less hot sauce. You can always add more after tasting. It is much harder to correct a cocktail that has become too spicy.

Do not over-stir. The goal is to combine and chill the ingredients without unnecessarily diluting the drink.

Taste before adding more seasoning. Tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, celery salt, and the salted rim all contribute flavor.

Keep the garnish simple. Celery, lemon, olives, and pickles are enough to make a Bloody Mary look inviting without overwhelming the drink.

Final Thoughts

The Bloody Mary has changed considerably from the simple vodka and tomato juice combination associated with its early history. Today, it is a flexible cocktail that combines savory, spicy, tangy, and salty flavors in one glass.

The basic recipe is easy to make at home. Start with good tomato juice, fresh lemon juice, vodka, and a few seasonings. Add a lightly salted rim, pour the drink over ice, and finish it with your favorite garnish. Once you have the basic balance right, you can adjust the spice and seasoning to make the Bloody Mary your own.
