Beyond the Vacation: Why What I Really Needed Was a Spiritual Retreat in Hawaii
By Sacred Voyages 03-06-2026 4
I had the idea of going to Hawaii a few years ago and just like many, I was tired.
I didn't know it, but the work deadlines had turned into weekends and my cell phone buzzed nonstop. Even when I had time to unwind, I couldn't get it to work. I figured out that a week at the beach will cure it.
It did help, but only for the time being.
It was through a spiritual retreat hawaii experience that I found another side to the islands which really changed me.
What is the difference between healing and escaping? What's the difference between healing and escaping?
The majority of vacations are made to break out of your day to day regimen.
You live in a lovely area, eat delicious food and enjoy some relaxation away from your duties. That's a no brainer.
However, many return to their own homes after a couple of days, and find that they have the same burden of stress as they had when they left.
There was another experience I had in Hawaii that seems like it was a little different, rather than distractions, it was awareness.
Rather than "filling time", I took time to slow down, listen, think and connect with myself.
The teacher is the student's island. The teacher becomes the student's island.
One morning early, before dawn, I awoke and quietly walked along the shore.
The ocean was calm. The darkness of the sky gradually turned to gold. No music, no talking and no timetable.
My mind quieted at last for the first time in a long, long time.
I learned that we don't often just 'be' the person that we are.
What Hawaii does in a natural way is amazing. It leaves room for thinking, if you allow it! The mountains, forests and coast offer the opportunity for you to be attentive in ways that life rarely offers you.
Learning to Let Go
I have gained most in the retreat in learning what a burden of emotional load I was carrying.
Not dramatic trauma.
It's merely years of build-up of pressure, expectations and constant productivity.
I started to clear my mind of thoughts and concerns that I've been carrying for too long with meditation, breathwork and guided reflection.
The process was easy, effective, and effective.
There are lots of people who come to retreats seeking answers. I was amazed to find that I don't need a lot more answers – a lot less distraction.
Why Sacred Voyages is unique
One of the reasons why my experience was so meaningful, was the help and guidance I received from Sacred Voyages.
Whereas Hawaii is viewed as a destination in Sacred Voyages is seen as a place of transformation.
It is these programs that will help the participants become more emotionally engaged with themselves, through cultivating mindfulness, sacred site exploration, meditation and intentional personal growth.
I liked best how structured and free it was.
I was given guidance when needed, and space when I needed it, for solitude.
It was a mixture of those things that made it real and not like it was written down.
Unexpected Benefits
Retreats are often thought of in terms of one's spiritual development.
To me the advantages that ensued were surprising.
On returning home I saw:
Improved attention, concentration
Improved sleep quality
Reduced anxiety
Greater emotional resilience
Greater understanding with regards to own objectives
An increased level of purpose
That wonderful experience was not a key to solving all my challenges in life.
It did offer a better perspective on those challenges as a healthy relationship.
More Than a Beautiful Destination is a book by Julia B. Gleeson.
I don't have to say it, but Hawaii is beautiful.
However, it's more than what you see that makes it special.
It's the feeling that you get.
The islands draw people out of the fast lane, offering them a chance to "hear" what they have to say. In a world that's constantly noisy, that could be one of the best gifts that you could give.
With a well prepared spiritual retreat in Hawaii, you can transcend relaxation and transform.
Final Thoughts
I now don't consider it a vacation, but I still remember the time I went traveling.
It was a momentous occasion.
This was a place where I was able to really reconnect with things that I had neglected and forgotten about myself over the years and the combination of Hawaii's beauty, intentional reflection and Sacred Voyages helped me to do that.
If you feel overwhelmed, feeling like you are disconnected, simply wanting something more, then you may find you have what I found:
The journey that is always the most important is not across the ocean, it's the one back to self.
