Ever leave a buffet stuffed but feel like you missed the best dishes anyway? That's not bad luck. Most people walk in with no real plan, and by the third trip they're two plates deep in rice and bread, out of room for anything that actually took skill to cook. It's an easy trap. Everything sits out at once, curries, tandoori, biryani, fresh naan, so people grab whatever's closest instead of thinking about what's actually worth the trip. End result: a full stomach and half a menu you never touched.
Going to an all you can eat buffet? A little planning fixes that. Know what to prioritize, pace yourself, get the spice order right, and the whole thing gets a lot less random. None of this takes willpower, just a bit of thinking before that first plate. Here are ten ways to get more out of your next visit, first buffet or fiftieth.
1. Don't show up starving. An empty stomach shrinks a little. Show up starving and you'll actually hit full faster, not later. Eat something small a few hours before instead.
2. Walk the whole spread before you touch a plate. Researchers at Cornell watched over 300 diners across two dozen Chinese buffets. The ones who scoped the whole spread first made better choices than the ones who grabbed the first thing they saw. Same principle applies here. Walk the line once. See what's actually on offer, tandoori, curries, biryani, the rotating specials, before you decide what's worth your first plate.
3. Skip the naan on round one. Bread fills you up fast and cheap. It's also the easiest thing to make at home. Save it for later, or skip it, and use that stomach space on the dishes that take actual skill and time, dal makhani simmered for hours, tandoori proteins, a goat curry.
4. Prioritize what you can't easily make yourself. Rice and simple sides are filler. A properly spiced, slow-cooked curry is not something most people are replicating in a home kitchen on a Tuesday. That's the value math of a buffet: pay one price, eat the labor-intensive stuff.
5. Take smaller portions, more trips. A smaller plate isn't a trick, it's just math. Go back more times with less on the plate each round, and you won't blow your appetite on the first thing you see.
6. Pace your spice. This is the one nobody else writes about, because most buffet-advice sites aren't covering Indian food specifically. Start with the hottest curry and your tongue's checked out for everything after it. Alternate hot and mild. Keep raita nearby, it resets your palate between rounds.
7. Go when the buffet is actually running, every day. A lot of restaurants only run their buffet two or three days a week. Ours runs daily, 11 AM to 3 PM, which removes the guesswork entirely if you're searching "buffet near me" on a random Tuesday.
8. If you're coming as a group, talk spice tolerance before you sit down. Nothing slows a table down like one person quietly suffering through a vindaloo they didn't know was that hot. A thirty-second conversation before you start filling plates saves everyone the awkward water refill later.
9. Ask what's fresh. Staff know what just came out of the kitchen. Ask instead of guessing how long that tray's been sitting there.
10. Stop before you're stuffed. Getting your money's worth doesn't mean eating past the point of enjoying it. A buffet that's actually good is worth pacing yourself for, not racing through.
Who This Isn't For
A buffet is built for exploration. It rewards guests who want to try several dishes in one sitting rather than commit to a single order. If you already know exactly what you're craving and would rather have it delivered straight to your table without the walk-up, our à la carte menu will suit you better than the buffet will, and that's a perfectly good way to enjoy the same kitchen.
Make It Easy on Yourself
