Avoid Travelodeal for Egypt
The company Travelodeal offer various holidays in Egypt and we took one that was called “Five-Star Hurghada Getaway & Nile Cruise Experience”. In fairness, the AMC Royal Hotel and Spa in Hurghada was fine. However, the Nile cruise was awful. Travelodeal use a local company, Hvezda, to run the holiday and, to put it bluntly, they are charlatans. We were told that our cabin on the boat we were supposed to go on, The Royal Adventure, was not ready and we would leave Hurghada a day late. The evening before we were due to go, we were told that the Royal Adventure had broken down and we would go one more day later still but would be getting a much better boat (the Sultan Hassan).When we finally arrived in Luxor, we were informed that we were not getting the Sultan Hassan but the Prince Omar. This turned out to be a terrible old boat. The cabins were shabby, with leaks and bits falling off. The sun deck had only 17 very old sunloungers for 105 guests, and the food was terrible: barely luke warm , undercooked and with very little variation.
As a result of the latter, 80% of our party of 25 got food poisoning. Not just ‘gippy tummy’ but full-scale food poisoning that resulted in two people actually having to be put on an intravenous drip.
Enquiries afterwards revealed that this boat change is a very common tactic; book you in on one boat and then transfer you to another much inferior one, while claiming it is of a like standard.
Another failing of the tour company was that the guide they allocated to us was virtually useless. He never seemed to be around when needed, failed to give us timings for excursions and, of particular annoyance to us, failed to take us on the Luxor East Bank tour which included the Karnak Temple, the most important in Egypt.
We complained to Travelodeal who basically washed their hands of the matter and said that Hvezda had denied the accusations and that the boat was, indeed, a 5-star vessel. And as Hvezda would not refund Travelodeal, we could not be compensated, even though our contract was with Travelodeal.
In the end we had to settle for a small financial ‘gesture of goodwill’ from Travelodeal which fell well short of proper compensation.
