Why Persian and Oriental Rugs Still Belong in Central New York Homes

A well-made hand-knotted rug can last for generations, and the right one quietly becomes the heart of a room. For more than 100 years, Jacobsen Oriental Rugs has helped families across Central New York find Persian, Oriental, vintage and modern rugs that fit the way they live.

If you are shopping for a Persian or Oriental rug in Syracuse, this guide covers what you need to know before you buy: what the terms actually mean, how to spot genuine hand-knotted work, which styles and sizes suit your rooms, and how to care for your rug through upstate winters. You can online, or come see the rugs in person at our Syracuse and Saratoga Springs showrooms.

Persian vs. Oriental Rugs: What’s the Difference?

Every Persian rug is an Oriental rug, but not every Oriental rug is Persian. “Oriental rug” is the broad name for hand-knotted rugs from a weaving belt that runs from Turkey and the Caucasus through Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India to China. A Persian rug is one group within that family: rugs woven in Iran, historically known as Persia.

Persian rugs are usually named after the city or region that made them, such as Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Heriz or Bijar. Each has its own recognizable patterns, colors and knotting style. Today, many Persian-design rugs are woven in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, using the same hand-knotting methods and classic motifs.

That is why you will see names like “Pak Kazak” or “Indo Bijar.” The first word tells you where the rug was made, and the second tells you the design tradition it follows. In the end, craftsmanship matters more than the label: a tightly knotted rug in good wool will outlast a poorly made one with a famous name.

How to Tell a Genuine Hand-Knotted Rug

A true hand-knotted rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, which can take months for a single piece. Machine-made and hand-tufted rugs can look similar from the front, so here is how to tell them apart:

  • Turn it over. On a hand-knotted rug, the pattern shows clearly on the back, and the knots are slightly uneven. A glued canvas or latex backing usually means the rug is hand-tufted.
  • Check the fringe. On a hand-knotted rug, the fringe is the end of the warp threads that run through the whole rug. Fringe that is sewn or glued onto the edge is a sign of machine-made work.
  • Look for small variations. Gentle shifts in color, called abrash, and tiny differences in the pattern are signs of handwork and natural dyes, not flaws.
  • Feel the wool. Good hand-spun wool feels soft but springy, and its natural lanolin helps it resist dirt and stains.

If you are not sure what you are looking at. We are always happy to show you the difference in person.

Popular Rug Types You’ll Find in Our Showroom

Every weaving tradition has its own personality. These are some of the styles our Syracuse customers ask about most.

Kazak

Kazak rugs come from the Caucasus weaving tradition. They are known for bold geometric medallions, deep reds and blues, and a thick, durable pile. A Kazak brings warmth and character to a living room, den or entryway. See our Pak Kazak (4.10 x 3.7), hand-knotted in Pakistan.

Oushak

Oushak rugs trace back to the town of Uşak in western Turkey. They are loved for their soft, muted colors and large, open patterns, which make them a natural fit for transitional and modern rooms. Take a look at our Pak Oushak rugs.

Gabbeh

Gabbeh rugs come from the nomadic weavers of southwestern Iran. They have a thick, plush pile and simple, almost abstract designs, sometimes with small animals or figures. Their relaxed look works well in casual and contemporary spaces. See our Gabbeh (3 x 5).

Bijar

Bijar rugs are named after a town in western Iran and are famous as “iron rugs” because of their dense, heavy weave. They hold up beautifully in high-traffic areas such as hallways and dining rooms. Our Indo Fine Bijar (5 x 3) is hand-knotted in India in this classic style.

Afghan

Afghan rugs often feature repeated geometric motifs and rich, earthy reds drawn from Turkmen weaving traditions. They are hard-wearing and easy to live with.

Traditional, Transitional or Modern: Choosing Your Style

The best rug for your home depends on the room around it. Most hand-knotted rugs fall into one of three style families.

Traditional rugs carry the classic Persian and Oriental look: central medallions, detailed borders, floral motifs and rich colors. They suit formal living rooms, dining rooms and homes with wood furniture.

Transitional rugs sit between old and new. They keep traditional motifs but use softer colors and more open space, so they work with almost any decor. If you are unsure, transitional is often the safest choice.

Modern rugs use bold colors and fresh, abstract patterns while keeping the quality of hand-knotted wool. They are a great fit for contemporary homes and minimal spaces.

A simple tip: pick one or two colors from your sofa, curtains or wall art, and look for a rug that repeats them. This ties the room together without making it feel busy.

Choosing the Right Rug Size

The most common rug mistake is buying one that is too small. Use this guide as a starting point:

Room

Common sizes (feet)

Placement tip

Living room

8 x 10, 9 x 12

At least the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug.

Dining room

8 x 10, 9 x 12

The rug should extend about 24 inches past the table, so chairs stay on it when pulled out.

Bedroom

8 x 10 (queen), 9 x 12 (king)

Leave 18 to 24 inches of rug on each side of the bed.

Hallway

2.5 x 8 to 2.5 x 12 runners

Leave a few inches of floor showing on each side.

Entryway or accent

3 x 5, 4 x 6

Keep it clear of the door’s swing.

Before you buy, mark the rug’s outline on the floor with painter’s tape and live with it for a day. If your space needs something unusual,

Caring for Your Rug Through Central New York Winters

Syracuse winters are hard on floors. Snow, slush and road salt get tracked indoors for months, and salt residue can dry out wool fibers and leave white marks. A little routine care keeps a hand-knotted rug looking good for decades:

  • Stop salt at the door. Use a washable doormat at every entrance and ask guests to take off their boots during the snowy months.
  • Vacuum gently. Vacuum once or twice a week with suction only, or with the beater bar turned off, and avoid running the vacuum over the fringe.
  • Rotate your rug. Turn it every 6 to 12 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear it evenly.
  • Use a rug pad. A good pad stops slipping, cushions the knots and helps the rug last longer.
  • Blot spills right away. Use a clean white cloth and cool water, and blot from the outside in. Never rub, and avoid household carpet cleaners, which can make the dyes run.

Even with good care, dirt and grit settle deep into the pile. Most hand-knotted rugs need a professional wash every one to three years, or more often in homes with pets and children. Spring, after a long season of salt and slush, is the ideal time. Learn more about our professional rug cleaning services.
