Failed Your MOT in 2026? Should You Repair, Sell or Scrap Your Car?

By ScrapMyMotor     17-10-2026     1

The garage rings with news you were hoping not to hear: your car has failed its MOT. The repair estimate is on its way, and you have three choices swirling around your head. Pay for the work, try to sell the car as it stands, or cut your losses and scrap it.

It is tempting to ask for a quick yes-or-no answer. Unfortunately, the sensible decision depends on more than the age of the car or the size of the first bill. An £800 repair can be worthwhile on one vehicle and a poor investment in another.

There is also a safety issue that should come before any financial calculation. A failed MOT does not necessarily mean a car is fit to drive home. Start with the test result, then work out what the vehicle is genuinely worth.

First, understand what the MOT has actually found

An MOT result can include minor defects, advisories, major defects and dangerous defects. A car fails when the test records a major or dangerous problem. Advisories are warnings about issues that may need attention, not automatic failures.

The distinction between major and dangerous matters. According to GOV.UK, if your car fails, you can only take it away when the previous MOT remains valid and no dangerous defect is recorded. The vehicle must still be roadworthy. If those conditions are not met, you will need to get it repaired before driving it. A vehicle with a dangerous defect should not be driven simply because a previous certificate has time remaining.

That makes recovery or garage-based repairs relevant to the decision. Do not assume a car can be driven to a buyer or scrapyard after failing its test.

How common are MOT failures in 2026?

The DVSA’s figures updated in September 2026 show an initial failure rate of 26.75% for class 3 and 4 tests carried out in April–June 2026. Those classes include cars and certain other passenger and light commercial vehicles. The number describes tests, not a claim that more than a quarter of all UK cars are unroadworthy.

The statistic is a reminder that failing a test is not unusual. It is not, by itself, evidence that the car should be scrapped.

One car may fail on a relatively straightforward lighting issue. Another may have serious structural corrosion, defective brakes and expensive suspension problems. The test report gives you a starting point; the repair quotation gives you the next piece of the picture.

Build a complete repair estimate, not a hopeful one

Ask the garage to separate essential work needed for roadworthiness from recommended maintenance. You want an itemised estimate covering parts, labour, VAT and any re-test arrangements. If a fault requires diagnosis before it can be priced, ask which costs are known and which are still uncertain.

Then consider the problems that the MOT may not tell you about. Is the clutch already slipping? Does the engine regularly overheat? Is the gearbox noisy? Will the tyres or timing belt need attention soon? Those are not reasons to invent an inflated repair bill, but they are reasons not to treat the MOT repair cost as the entire future cost of ownership.

For example, a £450 MOT repair on a reliable car worth £3,500 after repair may be sensible. A £1,500 repair on a car with repeated breakdowns and an after-repair value of £1,700 deserves closer scrutiny. Both examples are illustrative, not general price benchmarks.

Try the three-number decision test

For a practical comparison, write down:

1. Current value as it stands: What would a transparent buyer pay for the car with its known defects?

2. Value after repair: What could the car realistically sell for once it is roadworthy?

3. Total repair and associated costs: Include labour, diagnostics, transport and likely immediate work.

Do not compare the repair bill with the amount you originally paid for the car. That money is already gone. Instead, compare the money you would spend now with the usable transport or sale value you would gain.

Imagine a vehicle worth £2,400 when roadworthy, with a firm repair estimate of £650. If it has otherwise been dependable, spending £650 might preserve a useful car. Now imagine a similar vehicle facing £1,800 in essential repairs, additional unresolved engine trouble and a scrap or salvage offer of £300. The balance changes.

No universal percentage determines when to scrap. The question is whether the expense makes sense in your own circumstances.

Repairing: best when the fault is contained

Repairs can be worthwhile when the vehicle has a good maintenance history, manageable defects and a meaningful remaining lifespan. Keeping a serviceable car can also avoid the immediate cost and hassle of replacing it.

Ask the garage whether the quoted work resolves the MOT issues, what parts will be used and whether there are known risks of further expensive faults. If the repair estimate is substantial, a second independent opinion can be helpful, particularly for corrosion or complex diagnostics.

Remember that cheap is not automatically safe. Brakes, steering, structural components and tyres are not sensible areas for corner-cutting.

Selling: sometimes a better route than scrapping

A repairable car may have value to a trade buyer or a private buyer who understands the faults. Selling can make sense when it is not economical for you to repair the car but someone else can legitimately restore it.

Be clear and accurate about the MOT failure and known defects. Do not advertise an unroadworthy vehicle as ready to drive. Discuss transport arrangements and who will be responsible for collecting it. If an insurance write-off is involved, confirm the category and ownership position first.

The trade-off is time and uncertainty. A private sale may attract more interest but require conversations, viewings and careful payment checks. A salvage offer may be quicker but lower. Compare the actual terms rather than relying on optimistic advertised values.

Scrapping: reasonable when costs and risks keep piling up

Scrappage becomes an attractive option when the vehicle has severe corrosion, major mechanical failure, repeated expensive faults or damage that leaves repair financially unrealistic. It can also make sense when storage or recovery costs are growing while the car remains unusable.

For someone thinking, “I want to scrap my car online,” the first practical step is to submit accurate vehicle and postcode details for a quotation. That does not remove the need to check the buyer, confirm collection conditions and follow the proper end-of-life paperwork process.

If you are unsure whether a car will be destroyed or repaired and resold, ask the purchasing business to explain. Those are different outcomes and can lead to different documentation.

The Plymouth problem: what if your car is stuck at a garage?

A breakdown or MOT failure often leaves the vehicle somewhere inconvenient. Perhaps it is at a workshop in Plymouth and the garage has told you not to drive it. Perhaps it is a non-runner on a driveway in Plymstock. The collection location can change the practical options considerably.

Drivers comparing services to scrap my car in plymouth can review the dedicated We Scrap Your Motor Plymouth page. The service describes collection for MOT failures and non-runners, but the exact booking, vehicle condition and access requirements should always be confirmed.

If the car is at a garage, contact the garage first. Find out whether you owe storage or diagnostic fees and whether a recovery driver can attend during opening hours. Ownership does not automatically give a buyer permission to enter another business’s premises.

If the car will not start or steer, say so. A driver arriving with the wrong recovery equipment can cause delay or an unexpected change to the booking.

What happens to the paperwork when you scrap a car?

For a vehicle permanently scrapped in the UK, use an authorised treatment facility (ATF) and follow the DVLA notification rules. GOV.UK says you should give the ATF the V5C logbook while keeping the relevant yellow section, then tell DVLA that the vehicle has been taken to an ATF. If the car is completely scrapped, the ATF should issue a Certificate of Destruction within seven days.

A collection driver telling you “we handle everything” is not a substitute for checking your own DVLA responsibility. Keep a copy of the collection receipt, payment evidence, DVLA confirmation and any Certificate of Destruction.

In England and Wales, payment for a vehicle being scrapped must not be made in physical cash. Confirm a permitted bank transfer or cheque arrangement and make sure the paperwork identifies the transaction.

Questions worth asking the garage and the buyer

Before making a decision, gather answers to the same few questions:

  • Does the MOT record a dangerous defect, and can the vehicle lawfully move?
  • Which work is essential, and which items are advisory?
  • Is the repair quote fixed, or is further diagnosis needed?
  • What is the car worth in its present condition and after repair?
  • If selling, have I disclosed all material faults accurately?
  • If scrapping, which ATF will receive the vehicle?
  • Are collection and payment terms confirmed in writing?

These questions may seem basic. Yet they often reveal that the real choice is not “repair or scrap” but “spend more money with an uncertain outcome or accept a documented offer today”.

The decision is yours, but make it with full information

A failed MOT is a warning to investigate, not a command to abandon your car. Some defects are affordable to repair, and a vehicle with a sound history can be worth keeping. Other failures expose costs that are difficult to justify, particularly when reliability has been deteriorating for months.

Begin with safety. Ask for an itemised estimate. Compare realistic repair, resale and scrap values, including the practical costs of collection. Then choose the option that leaves you financially and legally comfortable, rather than the one that merely sounds cheapest at first glance.
